An Up Close Tour of Catskills Farm-life

The beautiful Catskill Mountains offers plenty of exciting things to do. For a special experience, head out on a local farm or agricultural tour that lets you truly get up close to the surrounding nature, history and culture.

Apple Pond Farm in Sullivan County was founded in 1865, resting on 80 stunning acres of countryside, and offers guests the chance to learn about farm life. They offer private tours that take you around the farm and experience all the different things that they do. Learn how they feed and milk the goats, how they process and dye wool from the sheep, or the many wonders of chickens, such as their “chicken tractor” and the life of a rooster.

The farm’s organic gardens are also available for viewing, and you can learn all about how owners Sonja and Dick have been producing their own electricity and hot water since 2003. Today, the farm creates about 95% of it’s own electricity per year!

Another local destination is the Root N Roost Farm, a permaculture-based, human and animal-powered sustainable farm. They provide farm-fresh products that are grown by hand, practice no-till farming and offer a variety of farm tours for anyone interested in discovering how they work. Their tours are open to the public every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and last around an hour.

Come pet and feed their chickens, pigs, ducks and turkeys, or enjoy tasting the fresh honey from their beehives. The farm has a few greenhouses and coops that are built from recycled and repurposed materials that you can visit, along with beautiful ponds and a natural trout stream! Their Farm Stand is full of farm-fresh produce, plants, and small crafts that you can purchase and bring home with you.
